About Oregon ESGR

Message from Oregon ESGR Committee Chairman

Norm  Hoffman BG (Ret)

  November 4, 2010

   Dear Oregon ESGR Members,

As of October 1, 2010, I was humbled to have the honor of assuming the chairmanship of the Oregon     Field Committee of ESGR. I take this position on with  a great respect for our Oregon ESGR team and the     great Reservists, Guardsmen and women that we serve

Former Chair, General Doctor’s shoes will be to difficult to fill. He has led the State’s ESGR efforts as high standards were set in each of the ESGR functional areas.  At the same time, Bill chaired the national strategic planning committee and later co-chaired the national training committee.  We all owe Bill a debt of gratitude and offer our heartfelt thanks for his service. I have asked Bill to stay on the Oregon committee and he has agreed to do so.  Initially, he will head up our employer outreach efforts.

The fact that Oregon ESGR is a well respected organization in no small part, due to your efforts and teamwork.  You can all be justifiably proud of your accomplishments.   We will continue to build on what has already been achieved, as we serve our Reserve Components and military employers.

The goal remains to:

“gain and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service by recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of the law, and resolving conflicts through mediation.”

We currently have plus 75 volunteers on our roster.  I want to thank each one of you for your dedication in pursuit of these goals.   It has been and will continue to be your efforts that will ensure that we will do a superior job.

We will continue to assist in the civilian employment related process that makes it possible for our Military Members to serve in the Reserve Components.   Their sacrifice is an inspiration to us all as they serve to keep our country strong.

For the first time, Oregon has three full-time staff and they are key to the success of our mission. I am pleased and fortunate to have three such professionals as Bob Elliott, Dawn Taylor, and Kandice Newton working for us. We have already begun to see the accomplishment of great things as they work together.

I hope that you are as excited about the future as I am.  I look forward to working with each of you to in making the Oregon ESGR Field Committee even more successful.  Together we will “face the challenges of the changing dynamics facing employers and service-members today.”

Sincerely,

BG (Ret) Norm Hoffman, Chairman

    Oregon Field  Committee

.

The large units have returned to Oregon which include the 364th Civil Affairs and the 41st Inf Bde is back from Iraq and all is going well on the ESGR side.  The effort of our committee reached out to about 85% of those employers who we knew about and presented them with a Statement of Support.

The Ombudsman team stands ready to assist those who may need some help returning to work.  We are currently busy with individuals and units going and coming to sites all over the world from all the different branches of the uniformed services.  In Sep 2010 the 3-116th Cav will start their training for preparations of being mobilized in Sep for a tour in Afghanistan.

I can tell you with certainty that we (Oregon ESGR Committee) are needed. The importance of our organization has become very clear.  We are needed and we must commit ourselves the same way we ask our service members to be committed to their duties.

ESGR has, and will continue to play a key role in the activation of guard and reserves as it relates to employee and employer problems.  As the war on terror continues ESGR faces an increasingly difficult task. With the new commitment to stay in Afghanistan units will continue to serve there.  We will always have a role no matter what.  With the next two years being busy our opportunities for ESGR personnel to interact between employers and employees on a greatly intensified basis, and all discussions must be complete, accurate and made on a timely basis. The members of the Oregon ESGR committee are prepared to respond to any eventuality.  We have already been tested and you all have reacted in an exemplary manner.  We must not back off- rather move ahead in an orderly and deliberate fashion.

Reservist of all services are grateful for the support and actions of ESGR. Obviously we are very proud of the men and women who serve our nation in uniform. Again I want to thank you all for the work you do for the Oregon Committee.
